Piers Morgan on Thursday showed his support of Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of the footballer's controversial decision to leave a game early.
Ronaldo exited the match-up between his team, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night before the final whistle blew. (Manchester United won the game at Old Trafford stadium 2-0.) The world-famous Portuguese striker was an unused substitute in the game, and his actions resulted in Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag announcing Ronaldo will not be in the lineup when the squad plays Chelsea on Saturday as punishment.
"Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United squad for this Saturday's Premier League game against Chelsea," Manchester United said in a brief statement. "The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture."
Morgan, a well-known British broadcaster and journalist, criticized Ten Hag while heaping praise on Ronaldo in a series of Twitter posts.
"The way Ten Hag seems to delight in humiliating @Cristiano is pathetic. Sticking the world's greatest ever footballer on the bench, making him repeatedly warm up, then not even use him as a sub, is just staggeringly disrespectful to United's top scorer last season," Morgan tweeted.
In a follow-up message that addressed Ronaldo's Saturday benching, Morgan added: "Disgraceful. Ten Hag once again opting to humiliate the greatest footballer in history & Utd's top scorer last season...@Cristiano should find another club asap where they treat him with the respect he's earned."
While Morgan defended Ronaldo, at least one social media user compared the footballer's actions to when Morgan walked off the show Good Morning Britain last year.
Morgan welcomed the comparison, tweeting, "If you get disrespected in the workplace, why put up with it?"
Morgan storming off the set of Good Morning Britain was the result of an argument with weather anchor Alex Beresford regarding comments Meghan Markle made during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. When Beresford brought up Morgan continuing to "trash" Meghan after already making it clear he doesn't like her, the host replied he was "done with this" and left.
Morgan exited the show permanently soon after the incident.
Wednesday was the second time this year that Ronaldo left a game early. After starting a preseason game against Rayo Vallecano in July, Ronaldo was substituted at half-time and later pictured leaving Old Trafford early. In an interview with Viaplay Sport soon after the incident in July, Ten Hag called Ronaldo's behavior "unacceptable."
